His blindness limits his perception, and he imprisons and relies on the fifth clone to investigate his past, suspecting that he himself is a clone and will be like his evil father. This conversely implies that he has little regard for his living anima/soul, giving greater regard to his rational mind. His murders become more pathological, leading to a scene where he explains to his female counterpart that his brides didn’t feel real until he killed them. They are cowed by the idea of facing external consequences. The older man kills his young wife first out of a sense of necessity she escaped after stumbling into the "subconscious" room and caused a stir in the external world, threatening his internal experimentation. The younger man and woman represent the eternal boy and girl, puer aeternas and puella aeterna. The alchemist archetype is embodied by the older man and woman, both scientists. The young bride and her older husband represent the maiden and a wise old man, whose relationship mirrors the dynamics of beauty and the beast. The house could be said to represent psyche, the forbidden room subconscious. There is ample psychological symbolism in this film. There’s also a young man in the house, the son blinded by his father after he witnessed abuse of a young clone, and an older woman, a researcher working on the mutation that causes neurodegeneration. There’s a modern twist in which the young wives are all clones of the older man’s original wife, who died only a couple years into their marriage from a neurodegenerative disorder.
